I rewatched it on gamepass and didn't see it, but it's entirely possible.

From what I saw, as he starts to extend his arms the ball jostles out of his right hand and down his right forearm which makes him pull back and regather the ball. 

100% would've broken the plane if he would've reached across with the ball secured in both hands.
