Because he's gonna cost us $17.5 million next year on his current deal. By restructuring and extending the contract, we can get that 2020 number down, assure we keep him past 2020 and make him happy with a short term extension. Cutting him after this season would save us $15 million in 2020, but I definitely don't wanna do that. The guy is way too valuable. Maybe we can give him a 3 year extension that is back loaded with a bigger signing bonus and more guaranteed money, but would lower his 2020 cap hit to a more manageable rate.

So the difference between doing that right now and in the off-season is?
