Not to belabor the point of how well one team is run but the Patriots were skewered a little when they traded Brandin Cooks after one year (and a Super Bowl appearance) with them for the Rams #1 pick. Cooks was a good fit with Brady, with the team and with the city. So why trade him away?

Money.

The Rams extended him with a second contract and he is now roughly 20-25% of their cap problem, using the OPs numbers.

Meanwhile, the Patriots enjoyed their year with him and paid him on the last year of his rookie contract, then used the #1 pick they got to draft either Isiah Wynn or Sony Michel and will enjoy 4 years of them on an inexpensive rookie contract (plus the 5th year option if they want as they are #1 picks). Then...they will be cut (a la Trey Flowers DE Detroit Lions multi-millionaire.)
