How would that make him less employable? It would exonerate him from the bad decision.

Saying Coughlin made the call wouldn't interfere with his ability to focus. It would most likely relieve the pressure he is facing from the the public and the media.
So throwing your boss under the bus to the public is a thing future employers look for?
