I had done a little research a while back and DF is right. The original capacity after the renovations was 73K (actually it was a touch less due to a few seats that were considered restricted viewing).

Weird.  I recall them scaling back from that 73K during 96-99 on more than one occasion.  
Anyway - attendance was far from a problem during that stretch regardless of the large capacity. 
The average from that period surpasses 15 current teams' average  and is 2K more than the total capacity of the newly built stadium in Minnesota.
