The problem with this team is and continues to be the lousy coaching. Jackson played how many more games once he left? Church is where? Gipson had an alright year, but his cap number was huge when they let him go. That's the nature of free agency, you replace the guys you signed two years ago with guys you drafted in the meantime. Sadly the drafting and coaching hire had Coughlin's arthritic fingers all over it and we ended up with good draftees who didn't want to stay and bad draftees we didn't need or who can't replace the guys they were supposed to replace. Khan has lots of different investments he needs to manage. Coughlin was hired essentially to take over a lot of Khan's tasks in managing the team. He was not hired to take over either Caldwell's job or Marrone's job, although Coughlin inserted him self in both. Caldwell had a great draft in 2014 (even with the Bortles mistake) with 3 Pro Bowl caliber players in ARob, Linder, and Telvin, plus useful players in Lee and Colvin. The 2016 draft was another stellar draft by Caldwell. His 2015 draft wasn't very good, but it wasn't very good for a lot of teams. Fowler was not a bust, he just didn't work out for the Jags. I give Caldwell a full pass for 2013 since he did pick the consensus BAP at that slot in a weak draft with plenty of time for players to be ruined by the Gus culture and being stuck with Gene Smith's scouting department. Caldwell has his flaws like an inability to trade down when it would have been wise, but he doesn't reach for players rated far below the pick and seems to have a great feel for just how long he can wait before picking a player. After January 2017 Coughlin gets a lot of the credit (Campbell) and blame (Fournette over a QB). I doubt Caldwell had much say in contract matters under Coughlin. "Why should I give information to you when all you want to do is find something wrong with it?" |
