The elation I felt when that thing missed was unbelievable.  I have never gone so deeply into the depths of despair and then so high into a feeling of ecstasy in such a short period of time.  It was a rocket blast of pure clean happiness.   And I'd bet 71,999 other people felt the same thing.  

Nowadays, we're all scarred and cynical from decades of ineptitude, but back then, we were innocent newbies, so we had no reservations about how we felt at the time.  God himself had come down and saved us.  There was no other explanation.
