What does that matter?  In my theological teachings I was never taught that holding a bible upside down, sideways or otherwise was somehow disresepectul.

It was a secret signal.  Like flying the flag upside down, holding the bible upside down is a sign of distress.  He was trying to let us know aliens had taken over the White House.
