If you understand the context that Sherman (rightly) placed on the word "thug", Kluwe's comparison isn't far off. When was the last time you saw a white player referred to as a "thug"? I'm not going to say that I fully agree with Sherman, but the guy's strongly onto something, and the word "distraction" will, no doubt, become code for "he's gay" in the coming months.

Likewise, but it's not going to go away. This is the first time it's happened, and Michael Sam is going to be the trailblazer for gay football players in the years to come. With each one that comes out, either before or after entering the league, the coverage will get less and less. I really hope that by 2019, we have several players a year come out and merit nothing more than a mention in an NFL roundup column.

 

Mods, could you please change the title to something less insulting than "admits to being gay"? Maybe "Missouri DE Michael Sam says he's gay" or something less demeaning? Being gay is nothing to admit to, because there's nothing inherently awful being hidden, despite what our homophobic friends may have to say on the matter.
