Yan seems like a very prideful person, who will stand on principle even though it hurts him- in this case of course, financially.  

The thing that surprises me a little bit is that no one can get through to him and make him see reason on this.  It seems so obvious to us that he is blowing off many many millions of dollars that he can never get back no matter what kind of contract he signs in the future.  The money he could have earned in 2019 is gone forever.  Pretty soon, the money he could have earned for 2020 will be gone forever.  And he can never sign a contract big enough to get back that money.  

A rational person would climb down from this high and mighty position of principle and do the rational thing.  It's hard to understand.
