If you find someone who actually knows a fact you don't, or shares a life experience that is foreign to you, it should change your mind, if only a little.
But that doesn't happen around here.
people here do have very different life experiences, but they are not sharing them in an empathetic way.
"I was in the military so anyone who disagrees with me about the military is wrong and should shut up"
"I am a cop so anyone who disagrees with me about what cops do is wrong and should shut up."
The experiences that would add to the conversation are things that happened to your growing up, things that are happening to your kids, or what happened to you the last time you dealt with a politician or a doctor.  Those are the things that really make you ask the "why" of life, where better discussions start.
but it seems like around here people are only ever sharing their work experiences, and work is a bunch of "what." good workers rarely ask why, the folks signing the paychecks already asked why for them. the good workers just ask what and how. And that's all as it should be, but it's not a very interesting discussion for people outside of the field.

When was the last time someone changed your mind here?

We share our experiences with you all the time. We tell you, based on our experience, there are certain ways its done in law enforcement / military and you refuse to listen. These instances are almost never a matter up for interpretation but you insist on disputing it anyway.

No one has changed my mind here yet.
But it does happen on other forums.
I appreciate your reply.
But I don't think you understood what I'm saying.
yes, you share, based on your experience, the way it's done.
But that was never what I was trying to discuss.
I am here to discuss why it is done that way.
And can we do better?
and I don't know about you in particular, but people do get defensive when the Why and the Should is brought up, with regard to the job that they do.
I certainly would get defensive if you started asking me if there was a better way to practice engineering.

The experiences that would add to the conversation are things that happened to your growing up, things that are happening to your kids, or what happened to you the last time you dealt with a politician or a doctor, because when you tell me about your actual work experience I just dismiss it as irrelevant as in these next bloviations of an intellectual lightweight punching above his weight class.
Those are the things that really make you ask the "why" of life, where better discussions start.

FTFY.

In this case, I'm not punching at all. Just seeking.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.
