You're telling me that nothing could prompt you to take a late-round flier on a three-year starter who improved every year at an ACC school and has the physical skills needed to be an NFL QB? I'd take Boyd in the fifth round in a heartbeat, because those physical skills can't be taught. The mental skills sometimes can and sometimes can't, but with a fifth-round pick, you've got the luxury of time. You've also got the luxury of knowing that virtually anyone you choose there (aside from kickers and punters, maybe) has a much better chance of bouncing around practice squads for a few years before going into timeshare sales than they do of becoming an NFL starter.

 

All that being said, Boyd is the kind of player who's going to be overdrafted on measurables. Anyone remember Marques Tuiasosopo? You know, before the whole Manti Te'o thing? Boyd reminds me a lot of Tuiasosopo, and Tuiasosopo had no business going before the fourth round. None whatsoever, but the Raiders jumped in and drafted him in the second round because of his measurables. He accomplished very little in the NFL, certainly nothing worth his draft status.

 

Garoppolo, on the other hand, seems like he's on the other end of the spectrum. He seems like the type who should be (and will be) drafted in the fourth or fifth round, despite his being talked up now as a third-round pick or earlier. If he lasts until the fifth round and the Jaguars do draft two QBs, why not? You could do a lot worse for a developmental backup than Garoppolo or Boyd. But if we're talking about an early-round pick, thanks, but I'll pass.
