We better not have that same "settle for" mentality when we draft a QB this year, or it may be a long, long time (and another GM and coach) before it's fixed.

 

This is a very good point.  Even with the bad draft of Byron, we were pretty stout the year he was cut and we moved to DG.  If the draft picks,FA picks, and signings (Garrard's contract specifically) after Byron were better, the bust of Byron wouldn't have really mattered-- or atleast hurt as much.

 

There are so many moves post Byron Leftwich that caused our current situation that it's hard to pick just one...  But if forced to choose, I would say signing Garrard right after his one break out year...  That hamstrung us in terms of what type of direction in the draft and free agency we going after that...  It really seemed that everything small decision began to compound upon one another after the Franchise decided that DG was going to be the long term answer.  And as it became clear that DG wasn't what we say that one magical year, the front office was VERY SLOW to right the ship.
