Doug says he and the coaches want to get a longer look at Mike. I wonder exactly for what. I don't think they believe that Mike is a long term solution at QB for the Jags. So maybe to see if should be the #2 QB and/or a bridge/mentor to a top QB they draft next year. If that's the case then I definitely think that Gardner is traded. He shouldn't be the #3 QB on this team, IMO.
There could be some interesting and unforunate ramifications to this decision. What if Mike actually wins games and knocks the Jags out of the #2 spot. There are five games left and the team has been playing more competitively. Now I personally like to see the team win, but I know others want them to continue to lose and keep their draft status. I do think that the Jets may end up picking #1 regardless of what the Jags do. And I wonder about some other teams who have been playing poorly as well. (and only have like three wins).
If Mike actually helps the Jags win some games, it would be something to see what may end up happening next year. And if he ends up playing poorly (and looks worse than Gardner has in his worst looking games this year, then they don't look good, because they chose him over a healthy Gardner. He could also end up up playing decently but the team still loses. Which will hurt them as well, because the team is still losing.

When Glennon tosses up a dud against the Vikes he'll go back to Minshew and claim he wanted to make sure he was perfectly healthy and had gotten enough reps in at practice.
And then.... come Black Monday no matter what happens at this point I believe Doug is released.
Then again we could just be seeing the finality of the end of the Minshew Mania era.
New regime is going to totally go through the roster in the off season and I could see the QB room looking completely different. Luton still has PS eligibility I think. Minshew moved for a late round pick or retained as a solid back up. Glennon will be journeymanning on to his next stop.
I saw reports that Doug could juggle QB's around, but that IMO is not giving the team "the best chance to win."
I also think that Doug is probably already out the door. And unfortunately, I think this could be the end of the Minshew Mania era in Jacksonville. I don't think that Doug was ever the biggest fan of Gardner to begin with. We saw how quickly he benched Gardner after his outing against the Texans last year even though he had the team at .500 and showed promise. And I think that Doug and possibly the coaching staff in general are still mad about Gardner not disclosing his thumb injury. They probably wished he would have told them earlier, so they could have had a better chance of salvaging the season. That's unfortunate for Gardner, he does love Jacksonville and even recently bought a house there. But I think he may end up having to put that house back on the market. I could see him getting traded to another team for a pick.
Gardner may not start again, especially if he's relegated to the #3 QB position. Though, it's also possible Mike may end up having poor play and maybe Gardner is inserted back into the lineup.
I do think we will have a completely new regime next year (with maybe Gruden being an exception) and I think that if the Jags keep the #2 spot they will draft a QB. And probably will draft one anyway, especially if they remain in the top 5.
