Someone might say Queen is the greatest band ever and I'd have to disagree. Someone could say Adidas are the best athletic shoes and I'd disagree. A difference of opinion is sometimes just that and nothing more. 

You make it more personal than it most likely is when you come back with nitpicking, name calling, insults, etc. Or when you act like you know better than others.

Sure. 
If you don't agree with someone about the best rock band or best athletic shoes, you can either disregard it and never do anything bad to them, or post a reply, "The Rolling Stones are better" or "Nike makes better shoes." 
Both are perfectly courteous.
What's not courteous is just tossing an egg at their house and walking away.
