Since it's not been raised, a topic for discussion.
Let's say Cincy takes Chase at 5. Does MIA then take Sewell, or do they settle for Waddle/Smith?
I'm gonna be honest. I live a little outside Cincinnati and I listen to sports talk radio almost every day. I cannot imagine the Bengals selecting anyone but Sewell. If they do, the fans here might riot. Even yesterday, one of the local radio guys said the main priority for the Bengals would be to never see the injury cart on the field ever again for Burrow. He was firmly in the camp of getting Sewell and protecting the QB. Chase is a tremendous WR, but the Bengals already have two very good, young WR's in Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins. You can find a game stretching WR with speed in round 2. You're not gonna find an OT like Sewell in round 2. Not even close. Also take into account that the Bengals only have 1 O-Line position that is stable after the 2021 season. Riley Reiff was only signed to a 1 year deal, so in essence, Jonah Williams is the only decent O-Lineman they have under contract after this coming season. You have to get the O-Line stabilized and the interior for the Bengals is nothing less than putrid!
Two of my best friends are huge Bengals fans and they are already talking about Penei Sewell playing LT, Williams moving inside to LG for 2021 and Riley Reiff playing RT. They could then use the middle rounds to find at least one interior guy to start in 2021. When Reiff moves on after 2021, Williams would then move out to RT, where he would stay, giving the Bengals very solid bookends for the foreseeable future.
Usually when a team takes a franchise QB high, they are tasked with putting supporting talent around him.
The Steelers followed the drafting of Terry Bradshaw with Franco Harris, Lynn Swann and John Stallworth.
Dallas followed the drafting of Troy Aikman with the subsequent drafting of Emmitt Smith, Alexander Wright, Alvin Harper, Jimmy Smith and Kevin Williams.
After Indy drafted Peyton Manning, they drafted guys like Edgerrin James, Dallas Clark, and Reggie Wayne.
After the 2004 drafting of Big Ben, the Steelers supported him by drafting Heath Miller and Santonio Holmes at the top of the next two drafts.
In 2012, Indy followed up the drafting of Andrew Luck with the addition of two TEs and T.Y. Hilton in the same draft, and then in two of the next three drafts, tried supporting him by adding Donte Moncrief and Phillip Dorsett.
Joe Burrow already has strong skill position support. Mixon is a good RB, and as TheOLine Matters pointed out, Boyd and Higgins are a strong pair of receivers.
That closing paragraph in particular is spot on. Not only does Sewell give them an outstanding player, his selection provides the Bengals all kinds of depth and versatility along the OL, with three guys who could play left or right tackle or slide inside to G.
Other players could help the Bengals. Pitts and Chase are outstanding prospects. But neither would seem to help Burrow and the Bengals anywhere near as much as adding Sewell.
Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
