You see the thing about the interview is that its original subject is why the Dutch managed to dominate the speed skating while the Americans faltered. That was the original question posed to the Dutch coach and in his reasoning in answering that question he was absolutely correct. The key thing about that interview wasn't his rather ill-informed and ignorant opinion on football but a key point he made: No one wonders why the American team dominates the basketball competition in the Olympics. They dominate because they have the best athletes because the NBA is by far the best competition in the world for the sport which in turn results in the best athletes. And it's the same with speed skating, The Dutch dominate because we have by far the best competition in speed skating which in turn results in the best athletes.

 

As for his opinion on football, I think he's partially right in thinking that the amount of focus placed on football is detrimental to the development of other sports. It leaves less resources for other sports and while there are plenty of money to support a great multitude of sports and athletes it does cut into the funds available for sports like speed skating. And when the people in charge of the development of the athletes choose to spend those funds on a fancy suit instead of the skater inside the suit you get results like these Olympics where the US didn't win a single medal in the speed skating.
