Urban has said that Trevor will have to "earn" the starting job. That made me laugh.

I do believe that if Urban feels like Trevor is ready enough to start, he will start. Even more so because they drafted him #1 overall and because of the talent that people project he will be. I do think that Urban may have made these comments for at least a couple of reasons. It could be due backlash he has received due to some of the decisions he's made like considering bringing on Tebow. Maybe a response to some of the draft picks he's made, where some people think he's doing stuff for friends, instead of what may be in the best interest of the team. I think he may be trying to show he's doing his due diligence and will welcome a "fair" competition for all spots on the team including the starting QB spot.

I don't think he's going to take a hard, and what I would call obnoxious stance that some coaches tend to take with their first round picks after they draft them. QB's that could start right away, (and are/could be the best on their team) but their coaches want to take a hard line approach with them for some reason. We've seen some of that in the past. I just think Urban wants to look like he's being fair and doing his due diligence and that may be playing a role in these comments.

And it could also reflect the team's current feelings on Gardner. They haven't traded him yet and I do think that Urban likes him. Maybe quite a bit and he wouldn't mind seeing some competition going on between him and Trevor (and to add some spark to things), before he names Trevor the starter. Unless they move Gardner before camp and have a competition for the starting spot between Trevor, CJ and Jake Luton lol.
