All Time Top 5s

#18

(07-11-2021, 03:19 PM)Bullseye Wrote: How would you rank the top 5 players at each position in team history?

I can tell you right now, in some cases, this will be a depressing exercise.  In many positions, I couldn't complete the list without wading deep into mediocrity, if not outright suckage.

QB

1.  Mark Brunell
2.  Blake Bortles
3.  David Garrard
4.  Byron Leftwich
5.  Gardner Minshew

This is a sad commentary that Bortles or Garrard could be considered the 2nd best QB in team history.  I think both Bortles and Garrard were turnover machines, but I give Bortles the edge because he had the better playoff run.  Though I was a BL guy, DG gets the edge over him because he had the better single season and the better playoff run.  Current Jaguar who could end up on this lst:  Trevor Lawrence

RB

1.  Fred Taylor
2.  MJD
3.  Fournette
4.  Robinson
5.  James Stewart

I give Fournette the edge over Robinson simply due to longevity.  Robinson only did it for a year.  Briefly considered Natrone Means over James Stewart, but Stewart had a longer Jaguars career.  Current Jaguar who can end up on this list:  Robinson and Etienne

WR

1.  Jimmy Smith
2.  Keenan McCardell
3.  Allen Robinson
4.  Allen Hurns
5.  D.J. Chark

Blackmon is heartache incarnate who had the ability to be atop this list  Current Jaguar who could end up on this list:  Chark and Shenault

TE

1.  Marcedes Lewis=what would his career have been were he allowed to go out on more pass patterns as opposed to staying in to block?
2. Kyle Brady
3.  Pete Mitchell
4.  Damon Jones
5.  ???

Sad that I can't come up with a viable 5th guy.  Maybe O Shaugnessey?!?

LT

1.  Tony Boselli-'Nuff said
2.  Eugene Monroe-not a huge fan
3.  Khalif Barnes-started well, burned out quickly.
4.  Ben Coleman-though he played primarily LG for us, he would fill in at LT when Boselli was injured.  He played the position better than anyone else in team history not named Boselli, but he didn't play the position often enough to rank higher.
5.  Cam Robinson

Current Jaguar who could end up on this list:  Little

LG-this is tough.

1.  Vince Manuwai
2.  Andrew Norwell
3.  Ben Coleman
4.  Brandon Linder
5. Zach Weigert

C

1.  Brad Meester-started his career as a G and was overmatched against bigger DTs (Haynesworth).  Moved to C and flourished.
2.   Brandon Linder-like Meester, began his career at G, only he didn't struggle nearly as much at G.  Has had a fine career since the move to C
3.  Dave Widell-A grizzled vet by the time he got to the Jaguars.  Very good size for a C, but it didn't translate into being a good run blocker.  Great at identifying blitzers.  Had a reputation for being a dirty player.
4.  John Wade-just okay
5.  Michael CHeever-was an unheralded catalyst for our 96 playoff un.  Had he not hurt his back, would rank as an all time Jaguars great.

RG

1.  Chris Naoele-a powerful blocker and steady vet
2.  A.J. Cann
3.  Rich Tylski
4.  Brendan Stai
5.  Shaun Bouwens-speaks volumes that someone from the expansion year ranks in the top 5 at the position.  In fact I am wondering if I am missing someone.

RT

1.  Leon Searcy
2.  Tony Pashos
3.  Maurice Williams
4.  Jermey Parnell
5.

Current Jaguar who could end up on this list:  Walker Little

DE

1.  Calais Campbell-wish he were still a Jaguar
2.  Tony Brackens
3.  Yannick Ngakoue
4.  Clyde Simmons
5.  Jeff Lageman

DT

1.  Marcus Stroud
2.  John Henderson
3.  Gary Walker
4.  Malik Jackson
5.  Seth Payne

Seth Payne got the nod over Marcell Dareus  He started slowly but developed very well into a very good DT for us.  He was not as innately talented as Dareus, but he had the longer Jaguars career and played at a higher level for us from 1999-2001 than Dareus played for us in 2017-2019.  Rob Meier got consideration too.  This position is probably the strongest in team history.  Current Jaguars candidates:  DaVon Hamilton & Marcus Brown

OLB

1.  Telvin Smith
2.  Kevin Hardy
3.  Daryl Smith
4.  Myles Jack
5.  Josh Allen

MLB

1.  Paul Poszlusny
2.  Mike Peterson
3.  Hardy Nickerson
4.  Tom McManus
5.  Lonnie Marts

Nickerson had a fine pro career, but his mere consideration for ranking in our top 5 at the position speaks volumes as to how deficient the talent on this team has been.  Same for McManus and Marts.  Current candidates:  Schobert, Jack.

CB

1.  Jalen Ramsey
2.  Rashean Mathis
3.  Aaron Beasley
4.  A.J. Bouye
5.  Fernando Bryant

Mathis should get top consideration due to longevity here, but in terms of pure ability, Ramsey was the best ever for us.  Too bad he didn't want to stay here.  Current candidates:  CJ Henderson, Tyson Campbell, S. Griffin, T. Campbell.

SS

1.  Donovin Darius
2.  Barry Church
3. ??
4. ??
5.  ??

FS

Ok QB's. Garrard made a pro-bowl, Bortles didn't. Both beat the Steelers on the road for their signature playoff win and lost to New England; the 16-0 2007 Patriots were better than the 2017 Patriots imho, considering Bortles lackluster play in the wildcard game against the Bills in 2017 I don't think we can really say that Bortles had the better playoff run. Garrard came up clutch against the Steelers and then was straight up MAGIC against the Patriots and his receivers let him down

TE - Julius Thomas should be #5 yea he was a let down in terms of the 1k perennial probowler we expected but 700-800 yards and just shy of 10 TD's in his 2 seasons here is a lot better than some of the J.A.G.'s the team has trotted out there not named Marcedes Lewis the past decade plus.

LT - Eugene Monroe had a rough rookie year and then was terrific, not sure why he gets as much hate as he does; the downgrade from him to Joeckel really kickstarted the "dark ages" imho, we didn't have a passable NFL starter at LT until Cam Robinson was drafted.

Guard - Coleman > Norwell, also Linder only played RG for us prior to his move to Center. Also Eben Britton should probably be #5 for RT, he was solid and looked promising but his career was derailed by multiple shoulder injuries and the herniated disc in his back which he never really recovered from.

DT - Sen'Derrick Marks over Seth Payne, I feel like Marks is a forgotten man, he was Malik Jackson for us before Malik Jackson. 8.5 sacks > 5 sacks; and Marks was just soooo disruptive before his knee injury.

I'd seperated Josh Allen into an "EDGE" category; as for the 5th OLB to replace him i'd give the nod to Justin Durant, but Clint Session or Clint Ingram if we're looking for a Strongside linebacker.

for CB, i'd move Bouye up 1 spot over Beasley, and i'd replace Fernando "Toast" Bryant with Brian WIlliams, man was an unsung hero at RCB across from Mathis for years.

SS:
Donovan Darius
Barry Church
Sammy Knight
Gerald Sensabaugh
Gerald Alexander

FS
Deon Grant
Tashaun Gipson
Reggie Nelson (unfairly criticized imho; never should have traded him)
Carnell Lake
Dawan Landry

otherwise I can see how most of the list was selected; you can nitpick the exact order between 2 places in a few spots but on the whole I don't think there's too many other snubs besides the aforementioned points.
Championship Formula:

1) Draft Trevor Lawrence!
2) Play good physical Defense!
3) Keep 91% of the roster healthy!
4) ???
5) Blank #2
6) CHAMPIONSHIP!!!
