You can do something small and get a felony. Doesn't even have to be a major crime. Just has to be a crime that violates a federal law. 
It is sad when people refuse to believe in redemption and rehabilitation. Imagine doing something dumb when you are young and then paying for it for the rest of your life. How rediculas is that?

It's called punishment for a reason. Redemption is rarely ever attempted from what I've seen. In my experience, criminals continue doing what they do and become repeat offenders. I believe in taking away the voting rights of felons, but non-violent offenders should be able to earn them back after staying out of trouble for 10 years. However, if they get another felony after earning back their voting rights, they should lose them for life. That would be fair.
