I haven't watched much of the recorded coverage, but for the most part it looked like a completely unorganized crowd without any real plan of action.  Yes, plenty were guilty of illegal trespass and vandalism, but I doubt anyone had the intention of overthrowing the government.  
The capitol police apparently had no established protocol for handling the situation, which didn't help.  At least one officer did not respond well and tragically a woman was shot and killed.  From my perspective, the use of deadly forced was not justified in that instance.  It was certainly an ugly day in our nation's history, but to label it as an attempted insurrection is an overstatement.

It was disorganized, yes, but pretty much everyone there shared the goal of disrupting the peaceful transfer of power.  As a country we are very lucky that they were disorganized. But that doesn't excuse what they did and it doesn't excuse Trump for his role in encouraging it. 

If I bang on your door in the middle of the night and scream that I'm going to take your children from you, but I have no weapons, not even a hammer that I might use to break your windows, you wouldn't say to yourself "oh that was harmless, that wasn't a real threat". You would still want me in jail, and you would want anyone who put me up to it to also be in jail.
