Phil Simms doesn't believe there is a franchise QB in this draft

#18

Quote:I've sort of hinted at the same thing for a while now, with the rare exception of Manziel and Bridgewater, but only those 2, because so many teams are so desperate for QBs.

But to prove, or at least substantiate Simms point a little, do this little exercise in your mind.

Everyone in this thread, take your top 4-QB picks this year, all of which most assume will go in the 1st or 2nd rounds, and are thus franchise guys in your thinking.

Let's put them in this order for me.

1)Manziel

2)Bridgewater

3)Bortles

4)Carr

Now, just for fun, add to that list: Jameis Winston, Mariota, Hundley, and any other guy you want to from next years presumed draft. And at least for me, the list changes pretty dramatically.

1)Winston

2)Manziel

3-4 tied)Mariota/Bridgewater

5)Hundley

6)Bortles

7)Carr

Bridgewater would no longer be one of the concensus 'Big 3' QBs IMO, while Bortles and Carr would barely be third rounders.

The point? There are currently QBs still in college that are better NFL-prospects than some of these draft picks this year. And that usually doesn't happen. This year's different though, and Simms' got a point. And perhaps some QBs have been elevated to 'Franchise QB' in a down year, when any other year they'd be a lock for the 3rd-round.

I'd still take Teddy or Johnny at #3 all day any day, but Simms point remains at the very least valid.

I highly diagree with you list.  Mine would go something like:

1. Winston/Bridgewater

2. Manziel

3. Mariota

4. Bortles

5. Hundley

6. Carr

Personally, I feel like Simms has gone soft in the head.  From the broadcast booth this year he would say stuff that just didn't make any sense, to the point where it was obvious his boothmate was irritated and had to correct him often.
