Yet another reason why statistics, polls and studies are unreliable indicators of anything. If every state, city, county and police department have different criteria for what a hate crime is then the numbers mean nothing. Add to that the ones who don't report their numbers, or report them late as Ohio did, and that adds to the unreliability.
Unless there is a national standard for what constitutes a hate crime and all law enforcement is required to follow that standard, and actually does so, none of this shows the true measure of the crime. Of course then there is the issue pointed out in the article. Reported vs conviction in a court of law. |
