With fans from outside this country or ties to other countries its a pastime, its history, its in their blood.... I.e. they have legit reasons to be soccer fans...

 

With most American born fans (and its mostly the younger generation), it has more to do with wanna-be's trying to latch on to an identity and trying to be a hipster. They cannot latch on to other already popular sports in America like football/ baseball/ basketball and claim it as "their own" so to speak. Similar to part of the reason young people rejected Boxing and instead gravitated to MMA/ UFC.
