He's a 23 year old 5'9" , 220 pound running back in great shape and averaging 5.5 yds per carry.

He can handle 340 carries in 17 games just fine. he doesn't need coddling and they'd reap rewards by turning him loose.

Well I assume we want him to perform well next year too, and hopefully even the year after that, and maybe even the year after that on the franchise tag. That is not likely if we're giving him ~400 touches a year. If that was my error and you simply want to burn him out this year then sure your plan is good.
