It's not hard to distinguish between a blank and a live round. A blank is a regular cartridge with no bullet. Also checking a revolver is as simple as opening the cylinder to see if it is indeed loaded or not.

To someone who isn't used to guns, that's not true. This was a revolver and there are some wadcutter ammo that look a lot like blanks, if you don't know what you are looking for.
