We were being shadowed by a Russian surveillance ship in the Sea of Japan which caused all of the hangar bay doors to be closed. Really odd in open calm seas. I was standing on the fantail looking through binoculars looking at Russians looking at me through binoculars. They centered up in our wake and closed distance to about 500 yards. The CIWS mount I was standing next to came to life and slewed on the ship like something out of Robocop, which is exactly what they intended to instigate. They immediately peeled off and pulled back.

Yeah, I've seen all that also. I guess my point is, I've never seen anything that close to the boat.  Maybe it is the video perspective that makes it appear closer than it really is.
