I opted to make 2 trades on draft day (via Fanspeak) which the Jaguars can realistically do. They gave up 1(1) to the WFT for 1(9), 2(9), 3(9) and 4(9). I'd even take that deal without pick 4(9), if necessary. I overpaid my top 3 free agents (Armstead, Reddick and Tomlinson) for $23, $16, and $11 million/yr. respectively. Rather than pay one of the FA wide-receivers too much, I drafted several due to the depth at this position in the draft. Adams is the only true #1 and he's not coming here. Here goes:
Q.B. Lawrence, Beathard
R.B. Etienne, Robinson and Zack Charbonnet (Rd. 4)
W.R. Jameson Williams 1(9), Chark (one year deal), Jailen Nailor (pick 4(1), Viska, Treadwell, M. Jones, J. Tolbert (pick 5/1) : One of these we either cut or trade in pre-season.
T.E. Arnold, Tre McBride (pick 3/5), Manhertz, Hollister
O.T. Armstead and Little, Richardson and Nick Ford (pick 6/1) in reserve
O.G.Tomlinson, Bartch,
C. Tyler Linderbaum (pick 2/1)
swing linemen: J. Taylor, Jarrett Patterson (pick 4/9), Shatley
D.E./Edge: Josh Allen, Hasaan Reddick, Chaisson, Derrick Hall (pick 3/9)
D.T. : Hamilton, Brown, Tufele
Swing linemen: Smoot, Gotsis
MLB: Nakobe Dean (pick 2/9), Wilson, Quarterman
OLB: Jack, Jordan Smith,
S.: Jenkins, Cisco, Ford, Thomas
C.B. Griffin, Campbell, Bryant (pick 3/10), Herndon
Return specialist (and reserve receiver): Agnew
Punter: Cooke
Kicker: anyone who can reach the end-zone on kick-offs
Obviously, not all of these are totally realistic (Linderbaum in 2nd, Armstead coming here), but it is not impossible. Having the top pick gives the NEW general manager the opportunity to execute trades, especially for rounds 1, 2 and 3. The large salary cap room of over $70 million allows Khan to slightly overpay free agents who might not totally love the idea of coming to the laughing stock franchise of the NFL. In free agency, money usually talks and the combination of Lawrence, a competent coaching staff and new general manager Jacksonville may not seem too bad to potential free agents. Having great golf, fishing and low taxes doesn't hurt either.
This is interesting, detailed and a version is do-able but really depends on the GM-HC team. To get a HC that has at the interview a list of people he has already talked to and will come with him will be a must. This is where retaining our current GM makes everything shaky as he has a lot of baggage he carries from San Fran. Yes, I believe that his decision on Baalke is absolutely critical. If the reports about his difficulty communicating with head coaches are true, this will compromise their ability to hire the best coach as well as signing the best free agents. It concerns me greatly that nothing was announced about Baalke today.
