I'm noticing a trend: When the PC police call for an Indian (ahem, native American) name change, the resultant is super generic, like Guardians or Commanders. Characterizing the Guardians rebrand as "super generic" tells me you know absolutely nothing about the reasons behind the choice. I grew up in Cleveland and Chief Wahoo will always have a special place in my heart, even if it does offend others. That said, I understand completely that just because I am ambivalent toward a word, image, or tradition (gawd I hate tomahawk chops, braves fans) doesn't mean that I should fault the team for not wanting to alienate other potential fans or groups that might have a more personal stake in the matter. I am much happier that they went with something that is both historic and iconic than something generic like "Rockers".

Commanders is lame, yes. Daniel Snyder is a buffoon, yes. Their former team name was significantly more offensive than the Guardians' former name was. There were probably other names up for consideration. Why they chose this over some other names, I don't know. I'm just glad they didn't go with the ethereal concepts that a lot of leagues have today like "Sky" or "Spirit" or "Fury". WFT was ok, but the NFL is not a collective of soccer clubs.
