Will Jags make the mistake of passing on the most dominant player in the draft?

But that's what the #1 pick is for right? To get the best player in the draft. With exception being made if you need a QB. You want the draftee who projects as being top 5 at their position as soon as possible.

Are any of the other names being tossed around projected to be top 5 at their position? Neal, Thibodaux, DE from Michigan? What I'm gathering is they will be solid starters, not super stars. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It's why good teams seem to remain good for a while. They're usually drafting later and get these players who due to position (S, CB, LB, TE) it's viewed they can't go #1 so the bad teams who can really use them, miss them and instead get players who are ranked higher because "you don't draft CBs #1".

We need a DE and WR more than CB, but none in the draft will be as dominant at their position as Sauce will be at his.

It's a numbers game. If you invested a 2nd RD pick at CB last year and your primary free agency signing was also a CB to be the number one? You get into this weird situation from a front office's perspective. Sure, Gardner is going to probably end up being one of the few players selected in RD1 that night that ends up being a pretty damn good football player.

However, when they look at the roster, the cap hits, etc. They'll figure out a way to justify to lean towards DE. For this same logic above. I cannot see them drafting Neal when they already invested a 2nd RD pick last year at LT. It presents a unique problem to a few of these personnel guys.

You ability to scout, roster build and level of foresight will begin to be call into question. It will impact your ability to land a job potentially in the future. As the NFL has proven. Change is constant.

You also get into "what if's" a lot. Maybe Campbell and Griffin can play like a top five tandem at CB... IF... a guy like Hutchinson or Thibodeaux can add more pass rush at DE to enable Allen and the rest of the line to pressure the QB, etc.

The list goes on and on. Again, for me, at the end of the day. Just like Stafford proved in one off season. Just like Brady proved in one off season. Just like Mahomes proved in Kansas City. CB, DE, defense this, defense that. Listen, get me THE QB and the coach capable of getting the most out of him and everything will eventually resolve itself on it's own at some point.
