I think if you're in the middle of negotiating a long term deal, and, assuming you're making progress and there isn't an impasse, all of a sudden you just walk away, the players and their agents will remember that.  Not a good look.  If Trent Baalke wants to rehabilitate his reputation around the league, that would not be a good thing to do.

Sure, it would be tempting, but you have to deal with people on an above-board and straightforward basis.  A good reputation is important if you want people to negotiate contracts with you.

Keeping a far inferior product is certainly not going to help his reputation with the fans. Even the vast majority of us who wanted to tag Robinson certainly didn't want him signed long term. The guy is a band-aid at best. He's just the best of a bad situation, because this OT draft class is so bad. If he signs Robinson long term, my hatred for Baalke will only grow.

I would like people to accept the bolded more. The team and its owner and GM are in charge. If they tell us they like certain players then it's not really worth discussing why they should be cut or who to replace them with. Sure, feel free in a fantasy post but not in any serious discussion.

I think we all accept that, but that doesn't mean we can't voice our displeasure when we see this team making bad moves. For God's sake, we have had 1 winning season since 2007. Those of us who have been loyal fans since the very first game of the team's existence have earned the right to voice our opinions and we will continue to do so. We're tired of the losing!
