Signing Henne allows the team to have maximum flexibility in the first round.   Suppose we did not sign Henne.   And we went into the draft with just Blaine Gabbert at the QB position.   So we get to our pick, and Bridgewater is on the board.   And while they like TB, they don't love him.   Do they have to take him since they only have Blaine on the roster?   What if someone offers them a boatload of picks to trade down?   

 

And Dave says to Gus, "We have to take the picks and trade down, this trade is too good to pass up,   Good luck, Gus.  Blaine is now your starting QB."  

 

You see, by signing Henne, we can draft a QB with our first pick, or trade down, or draft someone else.  It just gives us flexibility.
