They checked out John Metchie III though. He's ranging anywhere from late RD2 to early RD3. I mentioned in that other thread that they have plenty of picks at their disposal to come up and get a top WR.
Only challenge with that is the fact that there's a gauntlet of teams in RD1 with multiple picks that are in the market for a WR and it just so happens to align perfectly with where the value would be anyway at the position. So, tough market right now to be in.
I am convinced that unless they trade up on the opening night they won't bother looking at a WR until RD3. If there's a guy that maybe slips a bit or they panic that a team might take Metchie at the bottom of RD2 they might very well package up those 3RD round picks to get ahead of them to get him.
I am assuming it's Hutchinson right off the bat, probably another defensive player that nobody suspects at 33 or a damn good RT or G there that offers great value overall and they either trade up that same night for Metchie or hang back in the 3RD round come Saturday.
I also really like Calvin Austin III out of Memphis on my end. Had him as a target we trade up for in my final mock draft. There's links to him and the Chiefs now as a Tyreek Hill replacement because of his size/speed ratio.
I'm not seeing what others see with Metchie. Just a possession/slot guy, I think? I've got my eyes set on guys like Moore, Shakir, Pierce, Tolbert. I'm not sure Moore and Shakir are NFL Xs. But their speed and change of direction quickness are really good. If you had them at Z, then Zay would be an adequate X. But Pierce or Tolbert could be your X. Having any of those guys would enhance our WR corps. It would create opportunities for everyone else. Problem is that if you don't grab them in the 2nd, there's no guarantee they'll be there in the 3rd. But based on the news conference, I don't think they are using capital to go up for a WR. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see this be a defense heavy draft. I don't prefer that. I'd rather see OL, TE, and WR added. I'm so sick of putrid offense on this team. But my read is they think they've done enough on offense this off season.
Other than having an Alabama pedigree. I am not sure either. However, in fairness. Alabama has been churning out relatively quality and competent WR's as of late in the NFL. He was consistent over the last two years.
Personally. Out of this entire WR class. It's Jameson Williams or bust in RD1 for me. You would have to trade up to get him. But good luck convincing WR needy teams in RD1 to pass up on the chance to take him themselves.
Outside of him though I like Jahan Dotson, Jalen Tolbert, Calvin Austin III, Skyy Moore, Wan'Dale Robinson, Danny Gray, David Bell & Tyquan Thornton. I think there's good value there with good potential depending on where you take them of course.
Dotson being probably the highest graded receiver out of that group above. He's either there at 33 or he's not. Tolbert, Moore & Robinson are probably solid pick-up's in RD3. Austin III & Thornton are interesting because of their speed. They either go in late RD2 or could be there in RD3 or early RD4. Just depends on what happens on the opening night really.
David Bell is a sleeper for me. So is Danny Gray. Bell is more of a possession receiver that's going to have to win with his technique and route running at the next level. He has the potential though. I think he could be one of those guys that develops slowly along into a reliable 3rd down receiver like a Mohamed Sanu. Not flashy. Won't jump off the stat sheet but he can carve out a nice 10+ year career in the NFL just with technique and reliable hands alone.
Gray is fast, fluid and can hurt you on all three levels of the passing game. His hands can be a little concerning at times but he offers a lot of value as a kick/punt returner and he's actually a quietly good blocker. He's got a lot of work to do at this level but, he's a splash play threat for sure. Good value in RD4 or later.
