It's the same reason why women want to see other women in male-dominated fields and positions (granted, I think there is actually a difference between men and women, whereas racial differences are primarily cultural). Do you not think that women need to see female leaders? Models are important. That said, progressives also tend to forget that blacks make up 12% of the population, which means 50/50 representation is not possible.
