Whatever happened to working while going to school? It took me 12 years after HS part time to get my BS, even with short term student loans, while working full time and paying rent and later, a mortgage. I'm sorry, these sort of stories just make my blood boil. Left behind....good God. Blacks have gotten free money ever since the 70's from Pell Grant loans. Free. I had a black roommate in college. Was on the tennis team. Got Pell Grants, Hardship loans, scholarships. Total free ride. You know how he spent $80 a week (a lot in 1977)? Drugs. Pot, hash, quaaludes, amphetamines. He laughed about it. Knew he was gaming the system, didn't care, felt he was entitled to it because of race. Even told me once he faked a back injury cause he didnt want to play a match. I finally had to move out to an apt before that qtr even ended cause the drugs and sex parties were wrecking any chance for study or sleep. That qtr set me back personally 2 qtrs cause i had to retake classes. So forgive me if am more than a little cynical about this. Meanwhile, I'm shelving books in the library and playing in a band 3 nites a week in the student union to earn $13 a week. Both jobs that were paying for my food and for housing with this grifter. I hope he's had an illustrious career somewhere busing tables, but I doubt he would want to work that hard. Now I know this was just one person. Its not representative of an entire race. I have many friends and coworkers who have started IT companies, or work for consulting firms who are black. They are brilliant, hard working, unentitled entrepenuers who took the opportunities given them, and didn't ask for special treatment, just to be treated equally. Im not prejudiced against race, just against lazy. This ain't the 70's folks. For education, there's been plenty of opportunity for over 50 years now in the form of free money, grants, scholarships, etc for minority students. For the workplace, opportunity thru quotas, favored status hiring practices, etc. I've been on many interview committees with a government utility and have seen points added to interview scores because of race or gender. Didnt matter if they werent technically proficient enough to get through the interview, or were just flat out unqualified. And yet, we still hear these stories of inequality. Please. A loan isnt predujiced; whatever race, you should have to pay it back. You agreed to it, even if you majored in something totally worthless. Do some profitability research before you embark on your degree. As L2L said, its still never enough.
