Say what you want about the quality of the Monkees as a musical act, but they did recognize the brilliance of Jimi Hendrix, and, even though Michael Nesmith said the combination of the two acts was "staggeringly weird," he said later they hired him for their opening act so they could enjoy watching him every night.

Interesting, I didn't know that about touring with Hendrix. I did know that Dolenz had no musical training and couldn't even play drums when the TV show was first put together but took the idea to heart and took lessons. By the time they were recording their own music, he had become a reasonably competent drummer.
