Let's keep in mind while those stats don't seem spectacular, this was an era in the NFL where Mark Brunell was considered a good QB. Brunells best season was 20 td 9 int. A very underwelming stat line in todays game.

I totally get it which is why I don't really compare the two. Every situation is unique to each QB. Herbert came in to a team with Mike Williams and Keenan Allen. Mahomes had Tyreek, Kelce, and Reid. The only player/situation I think is somewhat comparable is Josh Allen who didn't have a great second season at all. It wasn't until he got Diggs (shocker) that he started to really take off.

This was year 2. 

Now Allen didn't come in with anywhere close to the hype that Lawrence had but he did go to a team that went to the playoffs the previous year (took that L too).
