I still like Doug and I don’t want him gone, but the best coaches tweak their scheme to fit their talent.  Otherwise you’ll always be chasing pieces to fit your scheme in this league through regular roster attrition from year to year.

I would have let him play out the year here and made a decision in the off-season versus receiving a 5th now.  I’m not suggesting we could have gotten much more given the circumstances, I just value his service even what little might have been left of it more than a 5th round pick.

The bolded resonates with me. There were 3 games this year where Doug utilized JR thoughtfully and he produced good YPC and a few TDs (even after this achilles injury folks are making too much fuss about) 

Regardless, I'm not in the building and I don't know every factor that contributed to this decision. 
I'm going to assume there's more to it than what I'm able to glean. 

It just feels like scheme was the predominant factor, and I'm not a fan of those types of roster moves on the offensive side of the ball unless it's OL. Gotta use what you've got - especially when they show talent.
