In my opinion the reason it didn't "land" is because Trump supporters don't use words like "sanctimonious."  They know words like "crooked" or "little," and they know who Pocahontas was.  But I can't imagine the average MAGA-hat wearing Trump rally attendee ever using the word sanctimonious.
