So this has been a background issue for this year but is going to be a big issue once the offseason kicks in. We are not in a great position cap wise for 2023. Now the current cap is $230m and not expected to jump too much this year due to the covid seasons. At the moment we are projected to be spending $235m already for next year and that is for 39 players only.
Now looking at easy was to save some money, there are a few easy cuts that help us out, some maybe not. Shaq Griffin- $17.5m contract but a $4m dead cap hit saving $13.5m RRH- $10.1m contract but a $2m dead cap hit saving $7.8m Rayshawn Jenkins- $10.25m but a dead cap of $4m saving $6.25 Jamal Agnew- $5.9m but a dead cap of $1.1m saving $4.75m Chaisson- $4.2m contract but a dead cap of $0 saving $4.2m Now I think Shaq and RRH are gone but those 4 players are the only cuts that save us cap, everyone else is huge figures so we don't have too much room to manoeuvre. Looking at the potential FA market, other than a few headline names who will be tagged or agree a deal there's not too much talent which helps us. We may be able to make one or two smart additions with the cap we create. We are going to have to improve in the draft and Baalke has to have a great draft this year. We need more quality on the roster and while making the majority of that rookies isn't ideal, it's the way we need to go this offseason. We are seeing this team getting better and growing and Baalke needs to give Doug those players that keep us going upwards or next year could be a repeat of this year's so close but so far.
