Patterson is free of any blame there.
Can't stand squib kicks when the opposing team only needs a field goal.
pick your poison. Kick it deep, fair catch, risk a kick OB, no time off clock, or worse, risk a potential deep runback. Give Lamar a few more seconds to run another deep bomb, or nibble into FG range with 2-3 plays
or
squib it to a reserve linebacker, who 1) cannot fair catch 2) has suspect hands 3) may scramble for 6-7 yards after receiving the kick and eats up a play's worth of time.
It's all chess. The drive before, Lamar hit Desean for what, 60 yds? Gimme the chance at a dude bumbling around a wobbly ball and potentially running time off the clock. It could have killed us just as easily as it didn't, but the other option was no less safe.

Works both ways.
Lesser of two evils.
Bury that [BLEEP] into the end zone and have them take the ball at the 25 with 14 left. That kick gave them an extra 15 yards and only killed 4 seconds. I wasn't a fan of it at all.
I watched a highlight reel over the weekend, and a few years back we boomed one right at the front line of blockers, doinked it off a dude's helmet, and caught it on the fly. THAT is a squib kick, baby!
The notion with the squib is that you get wonky bounces, chaos and unreliable handlers around the ball. We could have easily ended up with possession on that play, too. I don't want Lamar to have any other chances at a deep bomb to make Tucker's kick any easier than it was.

Give it to the returner and risk a return
Our kicker only has a 55% touchback percentage - there is no guarantee of burying anything anywhere
(that's what she said)
I'll take the risk that my kick coverage (that has been pretty good) will make the tackle if their returner decides to bring it out over giving the best kicker in the League an extra 15 yards.
Also as far as the touchback % goes, how do we know if that's scheme, or just not enough leg? They could purposely by trying to kick it right outside the endzone in hopes the coverage will get there and tackle him before the 25. Not saying that's the case, but it certainly is possible.
what if he tries to boom the mess out of the ball, and it goes out of bounds at the 1? There's risk in every play.
