Sounds like Tony is completely ignoring that the coach can be at all to blame for any of the defense's shortcomings in his assessment. Option 1 is the players are lazy or dumb, and option 2 is the players are dumb and overwhelmed.

You would think that if the scheme were complex, we'd have started slow, and gradually developed as the light bulbs went off one-by-one across the roster.

I think people who cover the team tend to protect the coaching staff. They are more comfortable criticizing the players in general, and they avoid calling out individual coaches with whom they have a working relationship.
