Well, the good news for them is it's just a one year deal.

 

They won't be hamstrung long term if he is somehow a malcontent.

 

If he performs well, and Brady and Belicheck decide to stick around past this season, they could always re-sign him.

 

If he performs well, and is a complete jerk about his contract and a locker room cancer, they can get rid of him easily.

 

If he doesn't perform well and is a jerk, they can dump him easily.

 

If Brady and/or Belicheck decide to leave after this year, then they can let him go knowing there will be a long term rebuild.
