He did?  Must’ve been before the Doug hire as an attempt at mercy for the kid.

I liked Vic and I miss his get off my lawn takes.  Oesher hasn’t come close to filling his shoes.

One thing Vic said that I believed at the time but I’ve since found to be false is the extent to which coaching matters.  He said at one point that NFL coaches are interchangeable and that talent eventually wins out if not immediately.  I think you can throw Meyer out as “not an NFL coach” so I don’t mean to contrast him with Doug here as an example, but I’ve watched football long enough to see successful coaches like Doug change franchises and and still have success with new rosters.  One instance isn’t enough to make that argument, but I’ve seen similar instances like that enough to know that although coaching may not necessarily trump talent, it certainly has more impact than Vic suggested.

I think if I had to assign percentages, I came away from Vic thinking that 90% of what contributed to consistent winning teams was talent and the other 10% was coaching.  I think that’s probably more 70/30ish in reality though. And there aren’t 32 really good NFL head coaches so they aren’t, in fact, interchangeable.

Case in point regarding talent/coaching, Belichick is without question one of the greatest coaches ever and can’t at the moment overcome the talent deficit within his division, so talent clearly still matters a good bit.

Sorry to derail, but these thoughts had been on my mind recently with regards to Vic.

It was pre-darft, and the gist of his thought was that if you either didn't see him as generational talent, or figured you could get a similar guy that year or soon after, you do the deal if some team offers you an RGIII package to move up.

I think the key though was that if you don't have any doubt that he is going to be the man, you'd be hard pressed to find a deal sweet enough to move you off the pick.
