Every new QB contract will be the "biggest contract in NFL history" from now on. Herbert next, then Burrow and then Trevor. It's just how it goes.

Rules changes over the past 2 decades have gradually magnified the importance of the QB from an already high level to "you simply aren't going to win sustainably without a good one."

There are usually only about a dozen or so of these upper tier QBs in the league at one time. So the teams that have a chance to keep one are the most viable contenders and must pay dearly to keep them.

The deals will grow to a breaking point until the league tries to cap them in a CBA eventually.
