He's dancing around the issue.  Even if a slave owner let a slave accumulate a small amount of money, even a large amount of money, the owner could take that money back at any time and the slave would not be able to do anything about it. The other white people would ignore the situation.  No real benefits of money or possessions were possible until emancipation.  Whether your name is nearest green or Frederick Douglass or anyone else.

That's a valid point.  Whether these skills could be applied for the slave's personal benefit was up to the master.  

On the other hand, the sentence says "...in some instances...," which is pretty vague.  That's why I can't get all up in arms about this.
