That's a valid point.  Whether these skills could be applied for the slave's personal benefit was up to the master.  

On the other hand, the sentence says "...in some instances...," which is pretty vague.  That's why I can't get all up in arms about this.

Correct. Green is one example of many. But since the passage is associated with DeSantis, it must be canceled at all costs. 

If Joe Biden had muttered the same sentence before [BLEEP] his pants and shuffling offstage, the left would be hoisting Nearest Green as African American accomplishment in the face of adversity. Context is everything here.
