1010XL the new flagship home of the Jaguars?

#68

Quote:WARNING: Longish Explanation follows.

This thread content about radio stations signals is my technical field of work.

Both WOKV and WJXL are 50,000 watt stations, but their classification is quite different.

WOKV  690   is a "Clear Channel" a designation that gives the higest priority from local and regional interference.

WOKV is a true regional frequency.

WJXL   1010 is located on a "Clear Channel" frequency, but is designated a local frequency. Therefore it's signal is restricted to JAX proper.

This is accomplished by the antenna structure at the transmitter site, the more the number of towers, the more direction the signal can be which in turn can restrict the signal to a certain area. The same is true to FM stations.

1010xl is licensed to serve the market of Jacksonville Beach primary and Jacksonville secondary. It was not meant to cover Baker, Volusia or outlying counties. That is why at night their signal dissappers and fades out the further you get from JAX.

It is a local hometown (JAX Beach) radio station.

WOKV 690 as a regional frequency was meant to have coverage up and down the coast and inland.

After Hurricane HUGO people in Charleston tuned to 690 JAX for local info during the daytime until local stations got on the air.

WOKV is a much stronger signal with regional reach and the right choice for a flagship station regardless of their choice of programming.

WFAN as TMD mentions is a protected clear channel station that was meant to have maximun day and night coverage.

That is why to this day there are certain stations that have near continental coverage at night. WWL, WLS, WSB,KMOX, KAAY,WCBS,WABC. This was all decided in the 1920-1930s when radio was the major source of information and entertainmemt programming. You tuned to the Big City station for Network programming and the local station for swap shop.

Nice, good read here.

Question. What would cause the loss or fade of the signal at night as opposed to during the day?
