Yes, you drafted Elway in 1983 (a year after drafting gambler Art Schlichter in 1982).  But Elway never played a down for the Colts because he didn't want to play for Irsay and Kush.

 

Yes you drafted Cornelius Bennett in 1987.  Guess what?  He never played a down for you either.  Worse yet, he played for your then division rival Buffalo, and he terrorized you for a decade.

 

You traded up for Jeff George, who failed.

 

You wound up with the top two picks in 1992, and drafted Steve Emtman and Quentin Coryatt.

 

In fairness to you guys, Emtman would have been an absolute stud, but he blew out his knee twice.  Coryatt was just okay. 

 

But you guys had a TON of ineptitude before finally lucking into Manning.

 

Don't act as though your franchise is somehow immune to failure or that winning is the Colts natural state.

 

It isn't.
