Just because they say it doesn't mean they believe it.

If they don't think they have a sure fire upgrade on the roster to the kid, and they still think it's too early to give up on his development, OF COURSE they are going to express confidence in him.

Do you expect them to plan on playing him the rest of the season but come out in a presser saying "We really need to get better at the Center position?" 

Maybe if it was a vested vet they were paying big money to - then maybe they challenge him a bit publicly.
 In this scenario you kinda have to be supportive of the kid even thought he's struggling. He'll get enough tough love in the film review sessions of OL meetings.
